FoRISK

FoRISK is an implementation mechanism under the aegis of FOREST EUROPE with the overall objective of enhancing the resilience of forests and the forest sector by supporting transboundary and cross-sectoral risk management within the framework of sustainable forest management. Established during the German Chairmanship in 2020, FoRISK completed a successful pilot phase (2021–2024), demonstrating its value in fostering international cooperation and supporting Sustainable Forest Management.Hosted by the European Forest Institute in Bonn, Germany, FoRISK operates within an inclusive framework that brings together experts, researchers, National and Observer Focal Points, and a Steering Committee composed of Forest Europe Signatories. Current committee member states include the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, with the support of observer countries like Bulgaria, Greece, and Latvia.

FoRISK focuses on three key focal areas:

• biotic agents,
• wildfires, and
• windstorms.

It facilitates expert exchanges, capacity-building activities, and rapid response actions such as its support to Ireland’s Ministry of Agriculture following Storm Éowyn. Through workshops, webinars, and the FoRISK Intelligence Hub, the facility provides practical tools and fosters strategic dialogue among its members.

One of the key objectives is to ensure that forest risk preparedness and prevention serve as an agile response mechanism to the challenges climate change poses to our region’s ecosystems. FoRISK continues to grow as a collaborative platform, connecting stakeholders and advancing forest risk management across pan-Europe.
