    Green Jobs and Forest Education

    We need skilled personnel to adapt European forests to climate change. The same goes for managing society's increasing demands for forest ecosystem services.

    Yet, according to the latest State of Europe’s Forests report, there was a decrease in Green Jobs in the forest sector. Forest education and work opportunities along the whole value chain need to match. Because fitting education inspires new attractive job opportunities to many in the forest-based sector.

    What are Green Forest Jobs? 

    “Green Forest Jobs provide forest-related goods and services while meeting the requirements of sustainable forest management and decent work.”

    The definition was adopted by the Expert Level Meeting in Bonn, 2022.

    9th FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference

    This webinar was a side event at the World Forestry Congress 2022 in Korea. Open discussion between three crucial sectors: education, employment, and policy-making about the status, challenges, and goals of forest education and green jobs.

    FAO published six regional assessment reports on forest education around the globe in 2021. Those reports reflect the current status and needs of formal forest education at all levels. This webinar was a discussion with forestry professors on both continents and students to get deeper into the results, needs, and opportunities for the universities and faculties of forestry sciences.

    In this episode of the FOREST EUROPE’s “From the Roots to the Canopy” webinar series, we presented survey results on Novel Green Forest Jobs and the ongoing work of the Expert Group on Green Jobs. There was a space to highlight the success stories of female professionals who transitioned from traditional forestry programs to Novel Green Forest Jobs.

    The roots of innovation – setting the course for innovation and sustainable growth in the forest sector

    In 2024, the International Day of Forests (IDF) theme was ‘Forests and Innovation.’ In alignment with this theme, FOREST EUROPE organized a webinar on 14 March 2024 to commemorate the day. The IDF, which is celebrated annually on 21 March, celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. More than 110 participants joined our webinar, which aimed to highlight the importance of innovation by showcasing existing innovative practices and exploring ways of addressing the topic at the policy level.
