Do Europe’s forests suffice? Forest resources and carbon sequestration

In this FOREST EUROPE webinar, Kari T. Korhonen (Natural Resources Institute Finland – Luke), Michael Losch (European Commission DG Agriculture and Rural Development), Sven-Erik Hammar (Confederation of European Forest Owners – CEPF) and Jori Ringman (Confederation of European Paper Industries – Cepi) discuss selected findings from the State of Europe’s Forests 2025 report (SoEF 2025).
The webinar focuses on forest resources, harvesting levels and carbon sequestration, and what SoEF indicators reveal about the current condition and future role of Europe’s forests. The discussion also places European forest developments in a global context, highlighting that while Europe continues to show stable or increasing forest resources, many regions globally continue to face significant deforestation pressures.
Key takeaways include:
- Europe’s forests continue to grow, but pressures and disturbances are increasing
- Forests continue to function as a carbon sink, although sequestration rates are slowing
- Harvesting levels in Europe remain below annual forest growth
- Forests remain central for climate mitigation and the circular bioeconomy
- Long-term, harmonised forest data are critical for informed policymaking and international cooperation
