Grow Green Jobs – showing endless new job opportunities in the forestry field
15th May 2022

You hear the wind in the trees, birds are singing and you feel the sunshine on your skin. Or is it maybe a cold and windy day, with rain drizzling down your neck? For sure, you are somewhere outside in the forest. I once saw a T-shirt with the text Better a rainy day in the forest than a sunny day in the office written on it – and nothing could be more true right now.
“I get up at five so that I can get to the forest as early as possible while it isn´t so hot yet. When I arrive at the tractor, I check its condition and how much diesel is in the machine” states a forest worker. Having enough fuel is crucial for him and his colleagues in the Archbishop’s forests in Czechia. The workers are logging trees with bark beetle infections – also in very steep and rough terrain. This is done with the help of a cableway, to reduce the impact on the soil.
“If I have lost my passion for forest kindergartens after more than 30 years? Absolutely not! It is great to see that there are more and more kindergartens opening in the forest. What we do in nature every day is the best you can do for kids! The kids enjoy it so much, even if it is raining, as today. We stay outside for about 5 hours, no matter how the weather is. Then the kids – and adults – are full of impressions and adventures. I would not swap this working place” tells us the forest kindergartener in Northern Europe enthusiastically.

These are two examples of green jobs related to forests that are displayed in our communication campaign. From February to May 2022, FOREST EUROPE posted regularly Green Jobs in the forest sector on its Instagram Account „foresteuropedotorg“. The jobs have a huge variety: from beekeeping in the forest, to forest kindergarten, management of protection forests, and integration of handicapped people in working life. But where do all these jobs come from?
In 2021, UNECE, FAO and FOREST EUROPE published the report “Guidelines on the Promotion of Green Jobs in Forestry”. The guidelines include specific recommendations in five key areas for action. There are best practice examples in each key area, to illustrate potential jobs and inspire the readers. Building on these examples, FOREST EUROPE established the communication campaign “Grow Green Jobs”. Almost 50 videos from 20 countries were collected, showing a great array of Green Jobs in the forest sector. In this transition time of the sector, it is truly inspiring to see which jobs are out there, what people do and how they use and work with the forest. In the end, 26 videos of different green jobs examples were selected, reaching more than 25,000 users on Instagram during the 3 months of the campaign, and obtaining almost 300 interactions between reactions and comments.
Everyone who is also working in a Green Job is still invited to post his or her position and tag it with the hashtag #growgreenjobs.
