Under the Swedish Chairmanship, FOREST EUROPE is working to make green jobs in the European forest sector more attractive and to support forest education and international cooperation networks. This Policy Brief presents the challenges, past recommendations, their uptake across Pan-Europe, and future directions for green forest jobs in the forests of Europe.

“The Policy Brief highlights the need to improve job quality and attractiveness through reskilling, gender equality measures, and better occupational safety and health standards,” says Ana Alice O. Tavares, one of the authors of the Policy Brief representing hte International Forestry Students’ Association, and continues:

“Another key take-home message is the need to modernise education and training by updating curricula for digitalisation and green skills, promoting lifelong learning, and strengthening multidisciplinary programmes with employer input.”

Finally, the policy brief emphasizes the need to strengthen collaboration and monitoring by keeping forest-sector workforce issues high on the FOREST EUROPE agenda, enhancing cross-country cooperation on Green Forest Jobs, and further developing pan-European workforce data.

Green Forest Jobs in the Work Programme under the Swedish Chairmanship of FOREST EUROPE 2025–2026

Under the Swedish Chairmanship of FOREST EUROPE 2025–2026, the Work Programme includes promoting a sustainable and circular bioeconomy, as well as attention to green forest jobs and forest education. The Work Programme further highlights the need to develop proposals to enhance the attractiveness of green jobs in the European forest sector and to support forest education and international cooperation networks.
