As part of the lead-up to the 9th FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference, we are excited to share a collection of short stories that delve into the complexities of European forests and the pressing questions surrounding their management. Authored by independent experts engaged by the Liaison Unit Bonn, these stories are designed to provoke thought and discourse on emerging topics on forests in Europe.

The narratives draw attention to the options, opportunities, and challenges facing those responsible for Europe’s forests, focusing on key policy questions that deserve high-level attention. They are informed by the latest scientific literature, including insights from the State of Europe’s Forests 2020, while acknowledging that the forthcoming 2025 report will provide updated data.

Our stories are structured along the six Criteria for Sustainable Forest Management (SFM), the foundational framework of the FOREST EUROPE process. By emphasizing the multifaceted nature of forest management, these narratives highlight the balancing act required to meet diverse societal demands while accommodating often divergent policy objectives.
