Press Releases 2009

2009/11/26:Sustainable Forest Management increasingly important for Climate-Change Mitigation

FOREST EUROPE, previously known as MCPFE, has underscored the crucial role of Europe’s forests, particularly as a mitigating factor in climate change, during its Expert Level Meeting (November 24-25). The meeting also emphasised the importance of protecting and enhancing the full range of goods and services associated with the continent’s forests. FOREST EUROPE’s policies and tools protect and sustainably manage Europe’s forests and provide a healthy basis for biodiversity, plants and natural products. A legally binding agreement on forests in Europe is considered as one option for strengthening cooperation on forests throughout Europe.

2009/10/30: MCPFE with new Information Services

The Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE) is extending its information services. The relaunched website www.mcpfe.org provides expanded features, content and information on forest policy and sustainable forest management in Europe. The user-friendly design, enhanced graphics and pictures make the site easy to navigate. New information services for the press, including the newly available press kit are designed to facilitate the work of international media and journalists.

2009/05/19: Growing the Future of Europe’s Forests

European Forest Policy Makers Discuss a Legally Binding Agreement Climate change is our biggest environmental challenge. By capturing and storing CO2, forests and wood play a key role in mitigating the negative effects of climate change. The European concept of sustainable forest management is to safeguard the environmental, economical and social functions of woodlands. It is based on the principles developed by the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE). The pan-European cooperation provides a policy framework for forests and forestry in Europe, thereby creating the basis for national forest policies. Representatives of the member countries are gathered in Oslo, Norway, for a two-day meeting to deliberate the possibilities for a legally binding agreement on forests in Europe.

2009/05/12: Co-ordinating Policies for Forest and Water Resources

Forest management, supply of good-quality fresh water, and watershed management are closely related. At the most recent Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE), in Warsaw in 2007, the ministers endorsed a Resolution on Forests and Water. As an important step towards implementing this commitment, a workshop on Forests and Water begins today in Antalya, Turkey.

2009/04/22: European Forests Provide Global Benefits

Climate change mitigation and adaptation, reversing forest degradation and loss, and biodiversity conservation are major topics at the eighth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF8), 20 April-1 May 2009, in New York, USA. The European concept of sustainable forest management plays a key role, capturing the multiple functions and objectives of forests. This is based on the principles developed by the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE).
